Education Program Reaches 40+ Children at the Juvenile Remand Home
IHCC implemented an Education and Welfare Support Project at the Plateau State Juvenile Remand Home, reaching over 40 children with learning opportunities and basic support services. The initiative aimed to improve access to education, nutrition, and dignity for children living in a highly restrictive and vulnerable environment.
Children in remand care often experience prolonged detention while awaiting trial or placement decisions. Many arrive with disrupted schooling or no formal education at all. Within the facility, limited access to learning can leave young people idle, anxious, and falling further behind academically. IHCC’s intervention sought to address these gaps by restoring children’s access to education and creating opportunities for personal development.
Through the program, children received regular educational lessons, helping them build foundational skills and continue their learning despite their circumstances. IHCC also provided books and essential learning materials, ensuring that every participating child had the tools needed to engage in the lessons and practice independently.
Recognizing that learning cannot happen effectively without basic wellbeing, the project also included food support to improve nutrition and help children concentrate during educational activities.
In addition, IHCC worked in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the Child Protection Network (CPN) to provide clothing, bedding, and blankets for the children. This collective effort helped improve living conditions within the remand home and restore a sense of dignity and comfort for the young people in care.
Beyond meeting immediate needs, the project reflects IHCC’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and rebuild their future, regardless of their circumstances. Education provides more than academic knowledge, it builds confidence, discipline, and hope for reintegration into society.
Through this intervention, IHCC demonstrated the power of multi-stakeholder collaboration in strengthening protection and care for children within the justice and remand system, while reaffirming the fundamental right of every child to education, dignity, and a second chance.
