IHCC Children’s Retreat Creates Space for Healing
In April 2025, the International Humanitarian Children’s Centre (IHCC) organized a one-week children’s retreat at a guest house outside the home environment, giving children in its care a much-needed break from routine institutional life. The retreat created a safe and supportive space for rest, reflection, learning, and bonding.
Designed as an experiential learning and psychosocial support intervention, the retreat allowed children to experience a sense of freedom and normalcy while participating in activities that encouraged personal growth. Throughout the week, children engaged in camping-style activities, team games, nature walks, and group challenges that built confidence, cooperation, and resilience.
The program also included educational talks and guided discussions on topics such as self-confidence, healthy relationships, and making positive life choices. Spiritual exercises and reflective sessions provided opportunities for emotional healing, helping children reflect on their experiences and develop positive values.
Beyond the activities, the retreat created meaningful moments of connection. Children formed stronger friendships with their peers while spending quality time with caregivers in a relaxed, family-like environment. These shared experiences helped build trust and deepen relationships.
By the end of the retreat, caregivers observed improvements in the children’s emotional wellbeing, social skills, and confidence. Many children who initially appeared reserved became more open, engaged, and hopeful.
The retreat reflects IHCC’s commitment to holistic child care, supporting not only the physical needs of children but also their emotional, social, and spiritual development. Experiences like this play an important role in preparing children for family-based care and successful integration into their communities.
Through initiatives like the children’s retreat, IHCC continues to create opportunities for vulnerable children to heal, grow, and look toward the future with renewed hope.
Looking Ahead
IHCC plans to make the children’s retreat an annual program, providing every child in care with this transformative experience. Future retreats will expand to include family members, supporting reunification readiness and strengthening parent-child relationships.
Make retreats like this possible. Your donation can sponsor a child’s participation, provide meals and materials, or support counselor training. Together, we can give vulnerable children the space and care they need to heal and thrive.
